At the University of Illinois Chicago’s Industrial Training and Assessment Center (UIC-ITAC), workforce development is more than just technical training — it’s about preparing the next generation of energy and sustainability leaders. Through a combination of leadership opportunities, specialized training, and hands-on industry experience, UIC-ITAC equips both graduate and undergraduate students with the skills, confidence, and professional readiness to make an immediate impact in the field.

Leadership Opportunities

UIC-ITAC offers students the chance to step into leadership roles early in their careers. As students gain experience through multiple industrial site assessments, they can qualify as lead students, responsible for guiding team discussions, coordinating assessment activities, and overseeing the preparation of final assessment reports.
Leadership extends beyond site visits. Students may take charge of specialized sub-teams focusing on areas such as equipment management, applied research, database development, or student recruitment. Senior students also serve as mentors, helping less experienced team members navigate technical challenges and professional expectations. This structure not only builds technical expertise but also cultivates communication, project management, and decision-making skills.

Specialized Training

Students at UIC working with UIC-ITAC receive targeted training in industrial energy efficiency and sustainability practices. Training modules cover:

  • Identifying energy efficiency opportunities in manufacturing systems
  • Understanding industrial equipment and energy-consuming processes
  • Conducting energy data analysis and savings calculations
  • Applying the Department of Engineering (DOE)-recommended assessment methodologies

Hands-On Industry Experience

UIC-ITAC ensures students gain real-world experience by integrating them directly into the full assessment cycle:

  • Client Outreach – Engaging with manufacturers before site visits to understand operational needs.
  • Pre-Assessment and Kick-Off Meetings – Defining project scope, responsibilities, and data requirements.
  • On-Site Assessment – Conducting energy measurements, equipment inspections, and operational observations.
  • Report Development – Preparing detailed technical reports, including energy savings equations, payback analysis, and actionable recommendations.
  • Final Presentations – Delivering findings to clients and answering technical questions.

This process is repeated across multiple projects each semester and throughout the summer, allowing students to refine their skills through hybrid, in-person, and remote collaboration with faculty, staff, and client teams. By graduation, UIC-ITAC students have practical experience working with diverse industries and a portfolio of real-world projects.
